Buddy & the Tan Family

A wrinkled face with small beady eyes - that is usually the first thing that is striking about Buddy. But looking past all that is still a dog filled with unconditional love.

At just 5 months old, Buddy was being cared for by a worker who desperately reached out to Mercylight when he was told he was no longer allowed to keep him at the industrial site he worked at. We swooped in quickly and brought him back to our shelter before AVA came.

Buddy has grown to be a rather unique-looking dog. Possessing a short coat of the colour of coal, Buddy strangely has very loose skin that hangs off his face, creating huge folds and deep creases which holds similarity to the likes of the dog breed, Sharpei.

It is disheartening to see how Buddy gets written off by potential adopters due to his peculiar features. Underneath the many folds and creases of a perpetual dreamlike face is an extremely affectionate dog that loves the company of humans. His favourite thing to do is to place his head on one’s lap and doze off. Despite his massive size, Buddy is like a gentle giant. He is one of the mildest and friendliest dogs at the kennel that gets along with both dogs and humans alike.

Thankfully, the Tan family, Mr and Mrs CK Tan and their children, Yi Leng, Nicholas and Moses, are experiencing this pure loving nature of Buddy by looking past his appearance and giving him a new home.

Buddy has since adjusted fantastically into the Tan family. The freedom Buddy enjoys is clearly seen every time Mr CK Tan brings him for his walks, where sometimes walks turn into swims! Like a fish, Buddy enjoys swimming in the sea and is praised to be a very good swimmer! Mr CK Tan also said that his family feels a lot safer now that they have Buddy. Though it was mentioned how gentle he is, Buddy guards his new family fiercely like a superb watchdog, barking at outsiders till they leave.

This gentle strange-looking giant of a dog indeed has found his state of serenity with the Tan Family. Because at the end of the day, looks do not matter but what is pure and loving inside.
